Alchemy has some great plugins, apple loops include some hidden treasures too, but they're not recognized enough. Apple has launched ProApps QuickTime Codecs version 1.0.1 adding new video codecs required by QuickTime-based applications, including QuickTime itself.
Weighing in at just 1.1 MB and requiring OS X 10.5.6 or later, ProApps QuickTime Codecs 1.0.1 adds new video codecs for use by QuickTime-based applications.
The codecs include: Apple Intermediate Codec; Apple ProRes; AVC-Intra; DVCPRO HD; HDV; XDCAM HD / EX / HD422; MPEG IMX; and Uncompressed 4:2:2.
Apple recommends the update to all users of Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, or Compressor 4.

ProApp is a term used to define Apple software designed for professional applications.
These apps have a distinctly different-looking user interface, as well as a different feel from normal Apple applications, and other software run on Mac OS X.
The ProApps include Logic Studio (Logic Pro, Apple Loops Utility, WaveBurner); Final Cut Studio (Final Cut Pro, Batch Monitor, Apple Motion, Soundtrck Pro, Cinema Tools, Compressor, QuickTime Pro, Apple Qmaster); Aperturel and Shake.
The free version of QuickTime is not a ProApp. QuickTime Pro, however, is. Available in OS X before Snow Leopard, it was an enhanced version of the software featuring more advanced tools and some export tools. Apple now bundles QuickTime X with Mac OS X.
QuickTime itself uses third-party components, or plug-ins. These third-party components expand its functionality, allowing it to play additional media types.

For example, the Xvid component for QuickTime allows users to play, as well as encode Xvids in QuickTime Player. Xvid follows the MPEG-4 standard as a video codec library.
