CADKEY is a 2D/3D mechanical CAD (computer aided design or computer aided drafting) software application released for various DOS, Solaris, and Microsoft Windows operating systems. Originally released for DOS in 1984, CADKEY was among the first CAD programs[1] with 3D capabilities for personal computers.

History[edit]

Peter Smith and Livingston Davies founded Micro Control Systems (MCS) in 1981.[2] MCS released CADKEY in 1984, the first 3D PC CAD product.[3] After the success of the product the company took the name CADKEY, Inc. and set up headquarters in Windsor, Connecticut. CADKEY won editor's choice and CAD product of the year awards from PC Magazine in 1986 and 1988.

In June 1989, Cadkey, Inc. purchased the rights to DataCAD from Microtecture Inc.

In September 1992, Dr. Malcolm Davies (no relation to Livingston Davies) was elected president/CEO of Cadkey, Inc. Dr. Davies joined Cadkey, Inc. from Autodesk where from 1988 to 1992 he was V.P. marketing and sales. As part of a strategic shift to direct mail-based sales, Malcolm Davies reduced the price of the flagship CADKEY product from US $3,500 to $495.[4]

By 1995, a Microsoft Windows version named CADKEY for Windows was introduced. Around this time CADKEY claimed 240,000 users.[5]

In June 1996, Baystate Technologies of Marlborough, Massachusetts, purchased the rights to the CADKEY product. Previous to the CADKEY acquisition Baystate Technologies had developed third-party software component modules for CADKEY, AutoCAD, Ashlar-Vellum, and Microstation.[6]

By 1999, Baystate Technologies was doing business as CADKEY Corporation, had added significant history-free solid modeling and freeform surface modeling capabilities to the product. A CADKEY variant without any solid or surface modeling capabilities was sold under the name CADKEY Wireframe.

In October 2003 Kubotek Corporation of Osaka, Japan, acquired Baystate Technologies. Kubotek formed Kubotek USA, Inc. based in Marlborough, Massachusetts, and continues development under the name KeyCreator. The first version of KeyCreator was shipped in early 2004.[1]

With newer versions of any operating system comes the same old question: Will I be able to run my old software on it? The answer is sometimes yes, sometimes no and often 'it depends on several factors.'

To explain it a little better. When I use the hotkeys to open the file. I can't just paste the server location to go find my file. Under the location to search for my files there is a drop down menu vs. An open search path(i don't know what it's called). When I say open search path, I'm trying to express it like searching for a path with my web browser, I can tab up to that dude and paste my location. It seems that I would literally have to navigate through that drop down menu to find it.

The release of Windows 10 falls into the latter category. Microsoft's Windows products are generally backwards compatible. A Windows operating system will generally be able to run software written for its immediate predecessor. Windows 7 could use Windows Vista programs for example. The vast majority of programs that ran on Windows 7 and Windows 8 will continue to work on Windows 10, with the exception of Windows Media Center, which is being dropped completely. Hi folks, I am currently maintaining just Windows 7 (both 32-bit and 64-bit) on numerous family and sister-in-law desktops and laptops. Some of the programs we run (particularly mine) were originally designed to run on Windows 98, and are currently being run in Windows 7 using Windows XP program compatibility mode. (I still have my reliable, old Windows 98 computer stashed in a corner, but don't use it any more.) Does Windows 10 have a similar feature allowing older software programs to run in Windows XP compatibility mode? So any application that runs in WIndows 7 64 bit should run on Windows 10. There is a compatibility checker that MS sent out with the icon it puts on your taskbar. I ran it on my system and it said Norton 360 will not run, It said my Intel Bluetooth driver won't work and VMplayer will need to be reinstalled to work. After MS sent the icon Symantec sent out a message that Norton 360 will be Windows 10 certified in the next couple of weeks. So if any app is still supported it will be updated to run with Windows 10. But if the company that writes the software is now longer around or the product has been discontinued it will probably not work.

Let it go past your list until the end. You can even count each loop and when you reach like 1000 files, you can stop. You probably know how many rows your textfile has, so it'll be easy to loop that many times.

VBScript could do this, although it will probably be harder to learn. AutoIt or AutoHotkey both are simple macro scripting programs which have a very simple syntax based language that will do it nicely for you too. I've worked with both programs and in this case, I think AutoIT will have the advantage for what you want to do.

For those users concerned about important files that were created using an earlier version of Word, Excel or PowerPoint, these will also likely continue to be accessible on Windows 10. I currently have about five thousand 2D drawings, under many directories on one server, and all of them have a.prt extension. These files were created in the 90's using a software called CADKey. The.prt file extension is not compatible with brand new software so I cannot open until I save it as a.dwg file in the old CADKey software. We were talking about bringing somebody to go through and open each drawing and export it to a.dwg format but, I wondered if there was a way to automate this process. I am not asking anyone to write me a script that does this, I just need some guidance because I don't know how to approach this problem. I need to know what tools and languages I need to learn in order to accomplish this.

• XP Mode was a feature of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate, that allowed you to run the more popular at the time Windows XP in a virtual machine. • Virtual Box, or any virtual machine software (VMWare is another example) allows you to install an operating system inside and run it inside of your primary machine. This would be arguable the easiest way to achieve your goal as you could simply install the software onto a 32-bit virtual OS. If you gave the VM 2GB of memory access, on a 32-bit install, it would run okay.
